Study under way into Sungai Perak water discolouration, says Saarani

IPOH: The people have been urged to remain calm as a study is now being carried out to investigate the discolouration of the water in Sungai Perak at Hulu Perak, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

The Perak Mentri Besar said the state Geoscience and Mineral Department director has been tasked to oversee the study and is expected to report to the state government next week.

"We ask the people not to cause a ruckus or unrest among the public, as the study is being conducted now.

"Importantly, no matter the colour, the water must be safe for use," he said in a press conference after opening the Karnival Mesra Anak Muda at Stadium Indera Mulia here on Saturday (Sept 19).

"Fish that are alive are safe for consumption," he added.

It was reported that the colour of Sungai Rui in Gerik had turned orange on Wednesday (Sept 16), and there were concerns of heavy metal or arsenic content in the water.

There had also been reports of the waters in Sungai Perak turning bluish-green since October last year and recently in July.

Earlier this month, Perak environment committee chairman Teh Kok Lim explained that fine particles of copper, iron, aluminium and silica were washed into the river by heavy surface runoff.

Suspended mineral particles under specific water flow conditions creates the striking greenish-blue hue when hit by light.

Saarani said the necessary steps would be taken if the water is found to be heavily polluted.

"For now, don't do anything first and let us study the matter," he added.
