PLANS are in place to install an additional 2,000 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras across Iskandar Puteri, Johor, between 2026 and 2030.
Iskandar Puteri mayor Datuk Hasrin Kamal Hashim said the city council had already installed 500 CCTV units between 2024 and 2025.
“This phased initiative aims to continuously strengthen security, monitoring and efficient smart city management,” he told StarMetro.
Hasrin Kamal said the network of 500 artificial intelligence (AI)-powered CCTV cameras had been integrated into the centralised Iskandar Puteri Command and Control Centre (IPCCC).
He said the Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) was able to coordinate emergency responses to crimes, fires and disasters based on information received through the IPCCC.
“The system is a key part of Johor’s smart city and public safety initiatives, enhancing security, law enforcement and traffic management,” he added.
Hasrin Kamal said the additional CCTV cameras would be installed at various strategic locations in public areas for monitoring and safety purposes.
These locations include traffic light intersections, commercial and business districts, recreational parks, public markets and areas surrounding educational institutions.
“MBIP regularly carries out mandatory inspections to ensure all CCTV units are functioning properly,” he said.
He noted that the real-time monitoring system also enabled the prompt detection of faults or service disruptions.
Maintenance and repairs for malfunctioning units was carried out immediately by the appointed service provider, he said.
He added that follow-up measures such as penalties could be imposed on contractors if faults persisted beyond the stipulated time frame.
On a related matter, Hasrin Kamal said it was not mandatory for business operators, including restaurants, factories, and shopping centres, to fix CCTV cameras outside their premises.
“However, we encourage the installation of CCTV systems as a proactive measure to enhance safety and support efforts in crime prevention and monitoring.”
He added that MBIP would continue to review the need for policies or guidelines on CCTV installation, in line with evolving safety requirements and smart city development goals.
