Namewee remand extended in murder probe

KUALA LUMPUR: Local rapper Wee Meng Chee, better known as Namewee (pic), has been remanded for an additional three days as the investigation into the death of Taiwanese influencer Hsieh Yun-hsi continues.

Lawyer Joshua Tay, when met outside the Dang Wangi police headquarters yesterday, said his client’s remand period had been extended until Thursday.

“It will run until Nov 13. For now let’s just let the investigation run its course. The police said the investigation has not been completed,” he said.

Tay added that his client is healthy and in good spirits.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus, when contacted, confirmed the extension.

Namewee surrendered to the police on Nov 5 after Hsieh’s death was reclassified to murder from the initial sudden death.

He was the last person seen with the 31-year-old in a hotel room in Kuala Lumpur at about 1.40pm on Oct 22.

He was later arrested for alleged possession and use of drugs, and was released on bail after pleading not guilty to drug-related charges at the Jalan Duta Court on Oct 24.

Hsieh arrived in Malaysia on Oct 20 and was scheduled to stay until Oct 24.

On a separate matter, the investigation on suspended policewoman Sheila Sharon Steven Kumar, also known as Insp Sheila, has been completed.

Insp Sheila landed back in the news after a video of her berating policemen for detaining a foreigner driving without a licence went viral on social media.
