ALOR SETAR: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department has foiled an attempt to smuggle 67.48kg of cannabis flowers, estimated to be worth over RM6.2mil, in the Tambak Persisiran Pantai Bukit Putih area of Kuala Perlis in Perlis last month.
Kedah Customs director Wan Marini Wan Hamzah said the raid, based on intelligence gathering, was carried out by a team from the Langkawi Marine Enforcement Branch together with the elite Customs Operational Battle Force Response Assault (Cobra) team.
"They found an abandoned sampan with four sacks. Further inspection of the bags found a large amount of suspected cannabis flowers.
"The total seizure comprised 67.48kg of cannabis flowers with an estimated value of RM6,209,816," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Nov 11).
He said the drugs were believed to have been smuggled in from a neighbouring country, and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Wan Marini also urged the public to help the department fight smuggling, especially of cigarettes, liquor, firecrackers, drugs and vehicles.
"Smuggling not only harms the country in terms of revenue leakage, but also poses a threat to national security and the well-being of the people," he said. – Bernama
