KOTA KINABALU: Two toddlers were rescued after an incident involving a baggage conveyor belt at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) here on Wednesday night (Nov 5).

The 9.30pm incident involved a two-year-old child who became trapped in the baggage handling machine, while her three-year-old sister was exposed to radiation from the scanner unit.

Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue Department station chief Mohd Hannis Mokthar said in a statement today (Nov 6) that the distress call was received at 9.52pm.

He said a team of firefighters and officers, along with a fire engine, was immediately deployed to the scene.

“Upon arrival, our team found that the two children had entered the baggage conveyor area within the screening section of KKIA.

“We used special equipment to free the trapped child, and both were handed over to ambulance personnel for further examination and treatment at the Women and Children’s Hospital (HWKKS) in Likas,” he said.

Hannis said both children were reported to be safe, and the operation ended at 10.20pm after confirming there were no further hazards at the location.

He also reminded the public, especially parents, to always supervise their children in public areas to prevent such incidents from recurring.
