Six vehicles hit by hillside rockfalls

AMPANG: Six vehicles were damaged following two rockfalls near Mutiara Court in Taman Bukit Permai.

The incidents occurred at about 8.15am and 8.50am here yesterday.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Azam Ismail said initial investigations found that several large rocks had fallen from a hillside onto the parking lot of the apartment, damaging six vehicles.

“Five vehicles were successfully removed, while another was completely destroyed. No casualties or injuries were reported in the incident,” he said.

He added that Fire and Rescue Department personnel from the Pandan Indah fire station were deployed to the scene.

“The Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) is also carrying out clean-up works using heavy machinery to clear the debris.

“We urge members of the public living near hillside areas to report any signs of soil movement or potentially dangerous activity to the authorities immediately,” he said.

Meanwhile, Teratai assemblyman Yew Jia Haur said that MPAJ had previously installed safety nets on the slope.

“It prevented the rocks from reaching the nearby residential area. The rubble only reached the parking area,” he said.

Yew said he has asked the MPAJ to conduct further checks on the slopes in the surrounding area to prevent such incidents from recurring.

“MPAJ routinely carries out maintenance and inspections on hazardous slopes within its jurisdiction.

“This includes assessing the condition of the safety nets and determining if any require replacement,” he added.

In the upcoming Selangor state assembly on Nov 14, Yew said he plans to ask the state government to allocate more funds to MPAJ for the maintenance of slopes.

“MPAJ oversees some 600 slopes under its jurisdiction, and 100 of them are high-risk ones.

“I feel it is imperative for the state government to allocate sufficient funds to them,” he said.
