Contempt case against Shafie and influencer to begin on Dec 1


KOTA KINABALU: Contempt of court proceedings against Parti Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal and social media influencer Che Muna Din will begin on Dec 1 at the Papar Coroner’s Court, sitting at the courthouse here.

It is learnt that the Attorney General’s Chambers issued the notice of committal proceeding to Shafie in Tawau on Monday (Nov 3), and to the activist at her residence in Shah Alam, Selangor, on Saturday (Nov 1).

On Oct 23, the Coroner’s Court granted leave to the prosecution to initiate contempt proceedings against Shafie and Che Muna, also known as Mona Din, for their statements over the ongoing inquest into the death of Papar schoolgirl Zara Qairina Mahathir.

"Both respondents are required to respond to the statement pursuant to Order 52 Rule 3(2) of the Rules of Court 2012, along with a supporting affidavit, within 14 days," the AGC said in a statement on Tuesday (Nov 4).

The case will be heard by Sessions Court judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan, who is sitting in as Coroner for Zara Qairina’s inquest.

Former chief minister Shafie is alleged to have made statements on the case during a political speech in Kinabatangan.

Mona is alleged to have questioned a witness statement in the inquest through a Facebook post on Sept 4.
