KANGAR: Timah Tasoh Dam in Perlis is the only dam at a critical level now, based on data from the National Water Services Commission.
As of Saturday (Aug 22), the water level at Timah Tasoh Dam stood at 26.50m, with the storage level at 33.13%.
The Perlis government is planning another cloud-seeding operation to raise water levels at Timah Tasoh Dam as the state works to safeguard water supply, said Mentri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah.
Abu Bakar said the state government and relevant agencies were closely monitoring the dam’s water level and planning measures to increase the supply.
“Last March, we carried out cloud seeding. But if this situation continues, there is a strong possibility that we will carry out cloud seeding again.
“This is to ensure there is enough water there to meet the needs of Perlis,” he said, as reported by RTM after the Info on Wheels programme in Kangar on Saturday (Aug 22).
Syarikat Air Perlis (SAP) said the dam’s water level would continue to be monitored.
SAP said it had also applied to the Perlis Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) for assistance in providing a diesel-powered pump with a capacity of 17 cubic feet per second to increase raw water abstraction from Timah Tasoh Dam.
“We urge the public to use water wisely and avoid wastage. Every drop of water is meaningful,” it said in a Facebook post dated Aug 22.
The company said the critical level that would trigger water rationing was 26.15m.
Completed in 1992, the Timah Tasoh Dam is a key water storage reservoir located on Sungai Korok in Perlis, roughly 17km north of Kangar.
Constructed starting in 1987, the project features a main dam, saddle dam, spillways, outlet works, and a 1300-hectare lake at normal pool level.
The facility regulates river flows to support domestic, industrial, and agricultural needs in the state, originally designed to supply 7.8Mgd of water and irrigate 2,466 hectares of padi land.
