KUALA NERUS: Datuk Victor Isaacs, 85, proved that age is no barrier to learning when he earned his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) after six years of hard work.
A seasoned lawyer, Victor’s achievement is an inspiring reminder that perseverance and dedication can overcome any obstacle, even in one’s later years.
His thesis, which focused on the role of professionals in drafting laws on euthanasia in Malaysia, proved to be one of his greatest academic challenges.
Addressing a sensitive issue that intertwines legal and medical ethics, he proposed the creation of a palliative care facility at UniSZA to ensure terminally ill patients receive appropriate care.
"I recommended that UniSZA set up a palliative care home on campus to support these patients,” the father of four told reporters after the UniSZA Convocation Ceremony here on Sunday (Nov 2).
Victor emphasised the importance of such initiatives in providing continuous care for patients who no longer receive hospital treatments.
He acknowledged that age was a challenge throughout his academic journey but never allowed it to stop him from pursuing his studies.
Despite losing his wife six years ago, he remained determined to continue his academic path, drawing strength from his personal loss.
"Knowledge has always been part of who I am. Losing my wife was heartbreaking, but it only strengthened my resolve to keep learning,” he said.
Meanwhile, another graduand, Dr Zamri Chik, 59, is preparing to pursue his PhD for the third time.
Having completed two PhDs in education at UniSZA, Zamri, a former research officer at the Terengganu Strategic & Integrity Institute (TSIS), is driven by a passion for helping students and researchers worldwide - particularly in Terengganu, Jordan, Nigeria, and Palestine.
"My goal is not to chase titles but to help students, especially with their research,” Zamri said, adding that his academic journey has only deepened his love for learning.
"Starting my first PhD was difficult, but by the second one, I found it easier.
"Now, as I prepare for my third one in political science, I feel confident because I understand the process,” he said. — Bernama
