Cigarettes worth over RM3mil seized in Kepong last Sunday

KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested four men and seized over 3 million cigarettes with unpaid taxes worth over RM6mil under Op Taring Alpha 1 in Kepong last Sunday (Oct 26).

Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department (JKDNKA) director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said the raid was carried out at 6.50am after a tip-off was received about the cigarettes.

"The raid was conducted after receiving a tip-off that the cigarettes were being loaded from a six-ton lorry to three vans, a one-ton lorry and a car in the parking area in front of Kepong Commercial Park,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (Oct 28).

Checks on the six vehicles lead to the arrest of six men, 31 to 44, and the seizure of various items including 3,460,000 cigarettes with a value of RM6,228,000, three vans, two lorries, a Hyundai Starex and eight mobile phones, with a total value of RM9,526,400.

The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, he said, adding that the success proved the police force’s continued commitment in curbing smuggling and the sale of undeclared items.

"From Jan 1 to Oct 26, the Bukit Aman JKDNKA team conducted 218 raids across the country, arresting 394 individuals for various offences… with a total seizures worth RM690.32 million,” he said. - Bernama
