Trump comes grooving into M’sia

KUALA LUMPUR: US President Donald Trump broke into his famous dance move soon after landing here, setting an upbeat mood for his historic visit to Malaysia and the Asean Summit.

Greeted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim after getting off Air Force One at the KL International Airport (KLIA) at 9.54am yesterday, the president went through the welcoming formalities before walking to a group of cultural dancers.

Visibly entertained, Trump got into the rhythm himself, pumping his fist and swinging his hips much to the delight of the VVIPs and colourfully-garbed dancers themselves.

A beaming Anwar sportingly joined in to add to the merriment at the tarmac.

Trump, looking fresh after a 23-hour flight from Washington, then went over to a group of women who were cheering and waving the US and Malaysian flags.

Thanking them for their show of support and warm hospitality, the US president took a US and Malaysian flag from one in the group and waved it to all those who gathered to welcome him at the Kompleks Bunga Raya.

He then continued chatting with Anwar as both leaders walked towards the parked Cadillac One or “The Beast.”

Anwar was invited to board the US president’s official vehicle and sat beside Trump for the ride to the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

Earlier in morning, Anwar welcomed Asean and foreign leaders arriving for the opening of the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits.

Among the foreign leaders were Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who made his first visit to Malaysia since taking office in March, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres and European Council President Antonio Costa.
