JOHOR BARU: A married couple has pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court to injuring and causing the death of a three-month-old baby boy in their care.
Factory worker Mohd Iqbal Hassan, 36, and babysitter Norsiayana Abd Samad, 34, were charged separately for the offence, which took place at a house in Jalan Cendana around 1.03pm on July 29.
They were accused of physically injuring the infant under their care, resulting in his death, which is an offence under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 and punishable under Section 34 of the Penal Code.
Offenders face up to 20 years in prison, a maximum fine of RM50,000, or both upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Shamira Mohd Luthfi Ismail offered bail at RM25,000 each and requested additional conditions, including reporting to a police station, refraining from contacting the victim’s family or witnesses, and surrendering their passports to the court.
National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer K. Bharathi, representing the couple, requested a lower bail amount, stating that Mohd Iqbal and Norsiayana need to care for their four-year-old child.
Sessions Judge Che Wan Zaidi Che Wan Ibrahim set bail at RM7,000 with the requested additional conditions for each accused, and fixed Sept 17 for the presentation of facts and sentencing.
