Guterres questions credibility of Myanmar elections, urges path to civilian rule


KUALA LUMPUR: United Nations Secretary General António Guterres reiterated his call to end violence and urged a credible path to restoring civilian governance in Myanmar.

Guterres said Myanmar’s planned elections in December are unlikely to be credible and will not help resolve the crisis.

“I don’t think anybody believes that those elections will be free and fair,” he said on Monday (Oct 27).

“And I don’t think anybody believes those elections will contribute to solving Myanmar’s problems,” added Guterres

He called for increased humanitarian assistance to help stop the violence in Myanmar.

“At the same time, we must pave the way for political evolution leading to civilian rule and respect for constitutional government,” he said.
