New treaty to strengthen Finland-Asean ties

KUALA LUMPUR: Finland is set to deepen ties with Asean through the Accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) in Southeast Asia.

This will see the promotion of economic cooperation and investments, and dialogue on network security between the Scandinavian country and Asean.

Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen, who is currently in Malaysia, will be signing the TAC.

“Finland will deepen its relations with Southeast Asian countries, one concrete example being Finland’s accession to Asean’s Treaty of Amity and Cooperation.

“We aim to strengthen trade relations and dialogue to promote stability, economic cooperation and sustainable development,” Valtonen said, according to the Finnish Foreign Ministry’s statement.

The signing is slated to take place later today (Oct 25).
