Floods hit Kuala Trong Muslim Cemetery, residents re-manage bodies in affected graves

TAIPING: The floods that hit the Larut, Matang and Selama districts here also affected the Kuala Trong Muslim Cemetery, near Bukit Gantang.

Bukit Gantang Member of Parliament Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal said several bodies and coffins were displaced from the graves, in addition to the tombstones in the cemetery area that were removed from the ground.

However, he said villagers helped to reinter most of the bodies that were removed from the graves.

"The cemetery area will be repaired immediately. I will discuss further with the residents' committee and mosque in the area," he said when met by reporters after visiting flood victims at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Simpang temporary relief centre here on Friday (Oct 24).

Meanwhile, Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz said the flood victims, comprising the elderly with chronic illnesses and mothers with young babies from the Bukit Gantang parliamentary constituency, would be housed at the Taiping Perdana Hotel here.

He stated that the victims involved were accommodated at the hotel to offer comfort because the current relief centre conditions were not very suitable for them.

As of 4pm on Friday, a total of 2,496 residents from 857 families had been evacuated to 24relief centres in the district, as well as Kerian, Manjung and Perak Tengah. – Bernama
