JOHOR BARU: Police issued a total of 968 summonses and detained 26 individuals, including a teenager, during a large-scale operation at several strategic locations across the city in conjunction with the Deepavali long weekend.
State police chief Comm Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the operations were carried out at areas such as residential neighbourhoods, entertainment outlets, shopping centres, temples, major highways, and the Johor Causeway on Sunday (Oct 19) night.
"We checked 6,107 individuals and about 5,000 vehicles in total. From the inspections, 968 summonses were issued for driving without a valid licence, vehicle modifications that did not comply with specifications, and displaying fancy number plates. We also detained 26 individuals, aged between 15 and 46, for traffic and drug violations," he said in a statement on Monday (Oct 20).
Apart from that, 170 vehicles, comprising 165 motorcycles and five cars, were also seized during the operation, which involved 1,238 police officers.
He said the operations were part of the police’s initiative to ensure public safety and traffic smoothness throughout the Deepavali celebrations. The state police’s Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department was also on duty to ensure smooth traffic flow and road user safety during the festive period, he said.
"We expect heavier traffic along major routes, particularly on both directions of the North-South Expressway in Johor. The public is advised to plan their journeys early, obey traffic rules, prioritise safety, and avoid driving when tired or under the influence of alcohol," he said.
