KUALA LUMPUR: Road closures and diversions will be conducted in stages from Oct 26 involving six major expressways and 25 roads in conjunction with the 47th Asean Summit.

“Periodic road closures and diversions will be implemented in stages, affecting six major expressways and 25 main roads across Kuala Lumpur starting Oct 26.

“Among the affected routes are Lebuh KLIA, Elite Expressway, NKVE, Guthrie Expressway, North-South Expressway, Mex Expressway, KL-Seremban Highway, as well as several main roads in the city centre including Jalan Ampang, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Parlimen and Jalan Kuching,” he said yesterday after addressing JSPT officers and personnel, who will be on duty throughout the summit.

Motorcade rehearsal exercises will be held from Oct 17 to 25 involving routes from the KLIA Bunga Raya Complex and Subang Air Base to hotels around Kuala Lumpur, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and Seri Negara,” he added.

Comm Mohd Yusri said a total of 1,111 JSPT officers and personnel will be deployed to ensure smooth traffic flow during the Asean Summit, which will take place here from Oct 26 to 28.

He said they comprised 91 senior police officers and 1,020 lower-rank personnel. He added they will be responsible for traffic control, VIP escorts and enforcement of road traffic laws during the summit.

“The JSPT operation will run from Oct 17 to 29 to ensure that all delegation movements and main routes remain controlled and secure,” Comm Mohd Yusri said.

He advised motorists to plan their journeys in advance, avoid affected routes, and comply with instructions given by traffic personnel on duty during the period.

“The public is also encouraged to use public transport such as the LRT, MRT, Monorail and buses to reduce congestion in the city centre. We advise motorists to use alternative routes,” he said.

Asked whether Kuala Lumpur will be in a “lockdown” similar to the Covid-19 pandemic, Comm Mohd Yusri assured the public it would not be so.

“There will be road closures and diversions in stages. Security will also be heightened during the period,” he said.

“We want to minimise road congestion and ensure the convenience of all involved,” he added.
