Man to serve six-month jail sentence for insulting woman’s modesty


SIBU: A 29-year-old man was sentenced to six months and 14 days in jail for insulting a woman’s modesty as he was unable to pay the RM4,000 fine that was part of the penalty handed down by a Magistrate’s Court here.

The accused – Thomas Renga Rabing – was initially sentenced to 14 days in prison and a RM4,000 fine, or six months jail in default of the fine.

Magistrate Onn Kerk Chern on Thursday (Oct 16) ordered the sentence to run from the date of arrest on Oct 11, 2025.

The accused was charged under Section 509 of the Penal Code.

According to the facts of the case, the 19-year-old victim was bathing at about 7.10pm on Oct 7 at a shophouse in Jalan Ding Lik Kong here when the offence took place.

She noticed the accused holding a mobile phone from inside a toilet adjacent to the bathroom.

Her screams alerted her father, who rushed to the scene and kicked open the toilet door.

He found the accused holding a mobile phone.

The accused told him he had deleted the recordings before fleeing the scene.

Police arrested the accused at about 1.35pm on Oct 11 during a raid at a shophouse in Jalan Wawasan.
