KUALA LANGAT: Several people, including 11 primary school students, were injured following a powerful storm with strong winds and a tornado-like phenomenon in Telok Panglima Garang.
Kuala Langat OCPD Supt Mohd Akmalrizal Radzi stated the incident, which took place at around 4.15pm on Wednesday (Oct 15), also resulted in damage to public properties and homes.
"A total of 11 students from SRA Kampung Medan sustained minor injuries.
"Of these, five received treatment at the Telok Panglima Garang Health Clinic, while the remaining six were taken home by their families.
"Additionally, a man suffered an eye injury and a woman sustained a broken leg after being struck by a metal object during the storm.
“Both victims are currently receiving treatment at Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang," he said in a statement on Thursday (Oct 16).
Supt Mohd Akmalrizal said the incident affected five schools, one community hall, and approximately 40 houses, all of which sustained varying degrees of damage due to the intense winds.
"Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.
"Among the schools and buildings affected were SMK Sijangkang Jaya, SK Sijangkang Jaya, SK Kampung Medan, SRA Kampung Medan, SK Jalan Tanjung, Dewan Wawasan Batu 9 Kampung Medan, Pejabat Penyelaras DUN Sijangkang, residential area at Batu 9 Kampung Medan and Taman Perindustrian Sijangkang Jay," he added.
Supt Mohd Akmalrizal said emergency teams and local authorities began clean-up and tree-cutting operations as early as 4.30pm, working collaboratively to clear debris and restore access to affected areas.
At 5.30pm, the Kuala Langat District Officer, who also chairs the District Disaster Management Committee, officially declared the incident a Level 1 Disaster in Kampung Medan, Telok Panglima Garang.
"By 8.00pm, a Temporary Evacuation Centre (PPS) was opened at Dewan Harmoni Batu 7 Sijangkang to house affected residents.
"Eight families, comprising 18 individuals, have registered at the centre so far," he said.
He urged the public not to approach or enter the disaster area without permission, to prevent unwanted incidents and to avoid disrupting ongoing clean-up and rescue operations carried out by relevant agencies.
"We will continue to monitor the situation and provide assistance to affected residents as recovery efforts proceed," he said.
