Safety monitoring to be boosted in all schools

PUTRAJAYA: The Education Ministry is working closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to strengthen safety monitoring across all schools, says Education director-general Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad.

He said the police will soon implement additional safety measures to ensure school grounds remain safe for students, including increased security.

“The Education Ministry takes incidents of crime among students very seriously, especially those that have occurred within school premises, including recent cases involving death and rape,” he said at a special press conference at the Education Ministry yesterday.

Mohd Azam also stressed that such incidents are not being treated as isolated cases.

“The ministry views them as a strong reminder for us to step up efforts to strengthen student safety and mental well-being.

“The ministry will be with the family members to provide support and any assistance needed to help them get through this difficult time,” he said.

When asked if the ministry conducts bag checks on students, he said the procedure already exists and will be enforced more strictly.

Meanwhile, he also said that the school administrators involved in the incident will be temporarily transferred to the District Education Office pending the outcome of investigations.

He said the ministry will look into how to implement the transfers to ensure the school’s operations continue smoothly.

“We will take immediate action, as the investigation needs to be carried out promptly,” he said.

When asked if the transfer would involve the school principal or other administrative positions, he said the ministry would evaluate the situation first to ensure that both the ministry’s and the police’s investigations can proceed smoothly.

Mohd Azam also said that teaching and learning sessions at the school will continue as usual.

He said the ministry will closely monitor the situation to ensure that the investigation does not disrupt the school’s daily operations.

Yesterday, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek issued a statement saying a special committee has been established to ensure that all aspects related to the stabbing case involving two students are investigated thoroughly, transparently and fairly.

She said the case is currently under police investigation and confirmed that the suspect has been detained.

She also said a team of counsellors and guidance and counselling teachers has been mobilised to provide psychosocial support interventions for the students, teachers and the entire school community affected by the incident.
