GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Penang has arrested a retired army officer for allegedly receiving about RM405,000 in bribes from a company owner in connection with the sale of the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association’s (PVATM) assets at below market value.
Sources said the suspect, in his 60s, was detained at around 10am on Monday (Oct 13) when he appeared at the Penang MACC office to give his statement.
"Preliminary investigations revealed that the alleged offences took place around 2015, during which the suspect held the position of PVATM information chief," the source said.
The source said the suspect is believed to have solicited and received bribes amounting to RM405,000 from the sale of five PVATM apartment units located around Penang.
It is further understood that the money was transferred into the suspect’s personal bank account through 12 separate transactions.
Penang MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrest, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009.
He said the suspect is expected to be charged at the Butterworth Sessions Court on Wednesday (Oct 15).
