Melaka leaders react to student gang-rape incident in Alor Gajah

MELAKA: The rising tide of indiscipline among students in the state has become deeply troubling over the recent years, says the state education, higher learning and religious affairs committee chairman, Datuk Rahmad Mariman.

“We hope the caning system will be reintroduced in schools, but it must be implemented wisely in a bid to educate and not to inflict pain,” he said when contacted on Saturday (October 11).

Meanwhile, Melaka Opposition leader Dr Mohd Yadzil Yaakub said the alleged gang-rape should be viewed as a serious case of indiscipline among students.

"Such occurrences are no longer isolated as it seen as recurring symptoms of a deeper problem from cases of bullying, fights and drug abuse to sexual offences, which demand serious attention from both the state government and the Education Ministry," he added.

Rahmad and Mohd Yazil were responding to the recent arrest of four Form Five students who were accused of sexually assaulting a Form Three girl inside a classroom at a secondary school in Alor Gajah on Oct 2.

Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the suspects have been remanded for six days until Oct 16 to assist in investigations under Section 375B of the Penal Code for gang rape.
