Tiong urges Asean collaboration to drive inclusive and sustainable growth

PETALING JAYA: Member states should strengthen their collaboration under the Asean Community Vision 2045, says Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing (pic).

The Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister said that this should be done as the goal is inclusive, sustainable and culturally rich growth for the region, adding that Asean’s success depends on remaining resilient, innovative and people-centred.

Tiong said this at the 34th Asean Socio‑Cultural Community (ASCC) Council Meeting and the ASEC High‑Level Forum on Tuesday (Oct 7) and added that cross-sector cooperation is crucial to realise the bloc’s shared vision.

He then outlined five priorities under Malaysia’s ASCC chairmanship.

They are culture and heritage, artificial intelligence and digitalisation, health and food security, youth and sports, and climate action, which he said would reinforce Asean identity and accelerate digital transformation.

Tiong said they would also enhance health preparedness and strengthen climate resilience.

“We will continue to call for climate action and enhance adaptation,” he said, adding that Malaysia will foster mitigation efforts.

“Malaysia continues to advocate unity in diversity,” he said, adding that innovation and youth engagement are key drivers of Asean’s future.
