Over 7,000 traffic summonses issued in first two days of Ops PUU enforcement

KUALA LUMPUR: Some 7,013 summonses have been issued in the first two days of the Law Compliance Operation's (Ops PUU) enforcement phase.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said the offence that saw the most summonses since the phase began on Wednesday (Oct 1) was obstruction of traffic.

"In two days, 4,963 summonses were issued for illegal parking or obstruction of traffic.

"Among other frequent offences are failure to follow traffic signage with 389 summonses issued, followed by not having a valid driving licence (309), not using pedestrian walkways (297), and fancy number plates (192)," he told reporters here on Friday (Oct 3).

Comm Fadil said the advocacy phase of Ops PUU was conducted from Sept 6 to 30.

"It was aimed at educating the public on traffic discipline, road safety and crime prevention in the city.

"We issued 76,939 warning notices to road users during that period. Similar to the summonses issued, the most common violation recorded was obstruction of traffic, which accounted for 33,421 notices issued," he said.

The advocacy phase also focused on raising awareness of the importance of traffic rules, reducing congestion caused by errant road users, and encouraging social engagement to strengthen community responsibility.

"With the conclusion of the advocacy phase, Kuala Lumpur police have now moved into full enforcement mode beginning Oct 1.

"Any motorist who fails to comply with traffic laws will face immediate summonses," he said.

He added that stern action would be taken against those who continue to break the law, including offences such as speeding, using mobile phones while driving, running red lights, failing to wear seatbelts, and riding without helmets.

"There will be no compromise for those who refuse to abide by the rules. The aim is not just enforcement, but also to cultivate discipline and responsibility among all road users," he said.

Police have stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility, urging the public to comply with traffic regulations to ensure safety not only for themselves but their families and other road users as well.

The Star recently reported that KL police will no longer issue warnings to traffic offenders, from Oct 1.

This follows the more than three-week-long advocacy phase of Ops PUU.
