KUALA LUMPUR: The police have consistently been taking action against mat rempit, but need the help of the community to keep the menace off the roads.
“We conduct regular operations called Ops Samseng Jalanan to curb this problem,” says Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri (pic).
The Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director said firm action will continue to be taken against these illegal riders under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Comm Mohd Yusri also emphasised the importance of parents and guardians playing an active role in monitoring and advising young people to steer clear of illegal racing.
“The cooperation of the local community is also vital. Information and feedback from road users are welcomed,” he added.
He stressed that JSPT remains committed to the government’s target of reducing road fatalities by 50% by 2030.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur JSPT chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the department has a special unit conducting operations against mat rempit.
“We conduct operations as well as intelligence gathering on the mat rempit menace almost every night,” he noted.
ACP Mohd Zamzuri said that more often than not, the mat rempit also illegally modify their motorcycles.
“We will take action against them for riding dangerously as well as modifying their vehicles,” he said.
“The mat rempit often prefer wide and straight roads, where they can perform their dangerous stunts and other illegal activities.”
He also reminded all parties, especially parents, to play their part in curbing the problem.
“Most mat rempit are underage, thus parents must also monitor their children.
“Don’t allow your children to ride without a licence or modify their motorcycles,” he said.
Recently, a road rage incident involving about 20 motorcyclists went viral, sparking outrage.
The incident showed a car being surrounded by motorcycles along a road, with one motorcyclist kicking the door of the fleeing car.
Serdang OCPD ACP Muhamad Farid Ahmad said the incident occurred on Sept 28 at around 4am.
