Cops hunting suspects behind EV break-in, RM100k in cash stolen

JOHOR BARU: Police are tracking down several suspects who are believed to have broken into an electric car and stolen a bag containing cash.

North Johor Baru OCPD Asst Comm Balveer Singh said an investigation was launched after a 17-second video was posted to Facebook showing the incident, which allegedly took place in Taman Perling on Thursday (Sept 25). The video has since garnered 1.5mil views.

Police also received a report from a 34-year-old man at 1.34pm on the same day.

“Initial investigations revealed that the victim had parked his car securely at around 10.11am. Upon returning to the vehicle, he found the driver’s side windscreen shattered by an unidentified suspect.

“The victim claimed that a bag containing cash was missing, with total losses estimated at RM100,000,” ACP Balveer said in a statement on Saturday (Sept 27).

The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, which carries a jail term of up to seven years, a fine, or both. Repeat offenders face harsher penalties, including whipping.

Those with information on the case are urged to channel details to the North Johor Baru district police headquarters at 07-5563122.
