Man charged with double murder in Kedah

GURUN: A man has been charged in the Magistrate’s Court here on Wednesday (Sept 23) with the murders of a woman and a mobile phone trader on Sept 11.

Syed Al Iqbal Syed Shahruddin, 30, nodded in understanding after the charges were read before Magistrate Anis Suraya Ahmad, but no plea was recorded as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

For the first charge, he is accused of murdering Ku Asraf Ku Shaif @ Ku Shuib, 30, in front of a house at Taman Nona, Guar Chempedak, Yan, between 9pm and 10pm on Sept 11.

The private sector employee is also charged with murdering Nurul Nur Syamira Khamis, 28, at the same place and time.

Syed Al Iqbal was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty, or up to 40 years’ jail and at least 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.

The court set Oct 21 for case mention.

It was reported on Sept 12 that a man and woman had been found dead with stab wounds in the Taman Nona housing area the previous night.

Police said the woman was found in a car outside a house, while the male victim was sprawled on the road nearby. 

They added that a suspect had been arrested in Kuala Terengganu and remanded to help in the investigation. – Bernama
