KUALA LUMPUR: The recent seizure of RM600mil worth of drugs in the Klang Valley should serve as a wake-up call for the nation, says Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
Responding to the Inspector-General of Police’s announcement that several drug processing laboratories were recently busted, with enough narcotics confiscated to supply an estimated 12 million users, Lee said the case highlights how Malaysia is increasingly being targeted by both international and local syndicates as a lucrative market and a strategic hub for drug distribution.
“The presence of such large-scale processing labs is deeply concerning. If these drugs had reached the streets, the social and health impact would have been devastating, particularly on our youths,” he said when contacted on Sunday (Sept 21).
While commending the police for their swift action, Lee stressed that enforcement alone is not enough to eradicate the drug menace.
He called for stronger preventive measures, including tighter border controls, better intelligence-sharing with regional and international agencies, and the adoption of advanced technology to detect and dismantle drug operations.
"There is also an urgent need for shared responsibility, where parents, schools, community leaders and civil society play their part in raising awareness and fostering resilience among youths.
The war against drugs is far from over. We must not allow complacency to set in. Collective effort, vigilance and commitment are key to protecting our nation from this scourge,” he said.
