Sarawak Environment Dept warns against open burning

SIBU: The Sarawak Environment Department is advising the public not to carry out open burning, especially during the ongoing hot and dry weather.

In a statement on Thursday (March 26), the department said prolonged dry spells heighten the risk of haze and uncontrolled fires, adding that added that the prohibition is also to prevent the deterioration of air quality due to severe pollution.

It added this includes burning agricultural waste, undergrowth and bushes, as well as domestic and construction waste at landfill sites or peatland areas, and any controlled burning conducted without written approval.

It added those found guilty of carrying out open burning without permission may face action under Environmental Quality Act 1974 and offenders may be fined between RM25,000 and RM1mil, or imprisoned for up to five years, or both. Offenders also face an additional fine of up to RM5,000 for each day the offence continues after a notice to stop is issued.

The department urged the public to play an active role and report any such activities at its 24-hour toll-free hotline (1-800 88 2727), email aduan_k@doe.gov.my, or through its e-complaint portal.
