QuickCheck: Is a tsunami alert test set to take place on Sept 22?

GIVEN Malaysia's past history with tsunamis, any rumour of such an occurence would go viral rapidly.

This is especially so when it is said that the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) is issuing an alert, even if the warning is in fact a drill.

Recently, it has been claimed that such an "alert" will be taking place in Miri, Sarawak, and Tumpat, Kelantan, as a test of the system.

Is this true?

VERDICT:

TRUE

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) says it will carry out testing of the Malaysian Tsunami Early Warning System (SAATNM) sirens at two locations on Monday (Sept 22).

MetMalaysia, in a post on the X (formerly known as Twitter) platform Sunday (Sept 21), announced that the testing locations are at Miri Central Park, Miri, in Sarawak, from 9am to 11am and Pantai Genting, Tumpat, in Kelantan, from 10am to noon.

"It is aimed at testing the new tsunami siren system for the implementation of the Site Acceptance Test (SAT) at the locations in question," it said.

MetMalaysia also advised the public, especially residents in the surrounding areas, not to panic over the sound of the sirens because it is just a test. - Bernama
