BUKIT MERTAJAM: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced an allocation of RM2mil from the Madani government for the development of silat.
The Prime Minister said that unity, discipline and mastery of knowledge were crucial for the Malay community to remain strong and respected.
In his speech, he said Malay history had shown that past glory, such as during the Malacca Sultanate, was built upon intelligence, technology, spirit, discipline and values, not just power alone.
“Without unity, discipline, knowledge, pride in identity and the upholding of our own culture, the Malays will remain weak and looked down upon,” he said before officiating the PMX Cup silat championship at Politeknik Seberang Perai on Tuesday (Sept 16).
Anwar added that the Madani philosophy was not only about governance but also about instilling spirit, values and resilience among the people, including through silat as a cultural heritage.
“I believe the Education Ministry will also mobilise efforts through the Pendekar Madani initiative together with silat associations,” he said
Among those present at the event were Pertubuhan Seni Silat Pusaka Gayong Malaysia (PSSPGM) chief Datuk Dr Raja Abdul Majid Raja Mat Isa.
Audiences were treated to an energetic silat demonstration showcasing the artistry and strength of Silat Kuntau Tekpi, Gayong Malaysia Sendo and Silat Cekak Pusaka Ustaz Hanafi, followed by the coronation and installation of the “Sri Tri Buana Si Manjakini Gangga Chula Sakti" title to Anwar by PSSPGM.
Silat is a traditional martial art deeply rooted in Malay culture, with origins tracing back centuries as both a form of self-defence and a cultural practice tied to royal courts and village communities.
In Malaysia, it has evolved into a respected art form blending physical combat with values of discipline, unity, and heritage preservation, often showcased in ceremonies, competitions, and national events.
