Sabah disaster victims to receive compassionate aid of RM1,000 or RM10,000

KOTA KINABALU: A Bantuan Wang Ihsan (BWI) compassionate aid of between RM1,000 and RM10,000 will be provided to those currently affected by the disaster in Sabah to help ease their burden.

The Sabah State Disaster Management Committee said a cash aid of RM1,000 would be given to the head of each family moved to a relief centre.

According to the committee, a death benefit assistance of RM10,000 would be given to the heirs of victims who lost their lives in the disaster.

"BWI is given to Malaysian citizens registered with the Department of Social Welfare. The government will also provide food baskets to all those affected by this disaster,” it said in a statement on Monday (Sept 15).

The committee also informed that the state government had obtained cooperation from the federal government through the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) to channel financial assistance, additional Bailey Bridges and other aid to ensure the disaster could be managed and addressed properly.

The committee added that local authorities and related agencies were actively carrying out monitoring, aid distribution and logistics coordination to ensure the safety and welfare of all victims.

"All rescue and response agencies under the Sabah State Disaster Management Committee are working at full capacity to deal with the natural disaster currently affecting the state,” it said.

A total of eight districts have been affected by floods and landslides with 11 temporary relief centres opened so far for victims numbering 220 families involving 863 people.
