IPOH: The Housing and Local Government Ministry has denied reports that there are over 100,000 units of overhang or unsold houses nationwide.
In a statement on Friday (Sept 5), a ministry spokesman said official data from the National Property Information Centre (Napic) showed the actual number at 23,515 units in the first quarter of the year.
The spokesman added that there had been a steady decline in such units during that period, starting in 2022.
"That year, there were 35,592 units, while in 2023 there were 26,872 units, and last year, 24,208.

"These figures consist of houses that have been completed but remain unsold; are under construction but not yet sold; and unsold units that have yet to be built.
"This shows that the national housing market is still stable and under control, with the government's efforts to enhance the housing policy in balancing supply and demand (seeing positive results)," the statement read.
Earlier this week, media reports had claimed that there were 100,000 overhang houses as of the first quarter, citing statistics purportedly from Napic.
