Zara Qairina inquest: Pathologist Dr Jessie Hiu to testify as first witness


KOTA KINABALU: Witnesses starting with Queen Elizabeth Hospital pathologist Dr Jessie Hiu will begin testifying from 2pm on Wednesday (Sept 3) at the inquest into Zara Qairina Mahathir's death presided over by Coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan.

She will be among 68 including 25 teenagers that will testify through sworn testimonies at the hearing where they will also visit the site of the incident at the school dormitory in Papar.

Earlier today, Amir Shah, who is a Sessions Court judge, accepted the applications from the legal teams representing five teenagers charged with bullying Zara Qairina to be an interested party in the inquest.

"We are protecting their interests," said counsel for one of the teenagers, Datuk Ram Singh.

The court also accepted a new application by the lawyer of Zara Qairina's mother, the legal team representing Zara Qairina's father Mahathir Mohd Hashim and the Education Ministry, as well as the legal teams for the four teenagers charged with bullying to be included as interested parties during the morning session.

Sabah Law Association will sit through the hearing as watching brief.

Zara Qairina, 13, was found unconscious on July 16 at her school and declared dead the following day at Queen Elizabeth hospital.

The state prosecution director Nahra Dollah and a team of four deputy prosecutors were present at the inquest.
