KOTA KINABALU: Over 11 tonnes of processed and packaged ketum powder ready for distribution in the local market were seized at a premise in Tuaran about 40 km from here, Sabah Region 4 Marine Police Commander, Asst Comm Ahmad Amri Abd Rahman said.
The seizure, weighing 11,450 kg with a street value of RM1.145mil, is believed to be among the largest involving ketum in Sabah.
The operation was carried out around 6am on Thursday (Aug 6) by the State Marine police together with the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department from the Tuaran District police headquarters after they received intelligence information.
ACP Ahmad Amri said four people — three men aged 23 to 46, and a 28‑year‑old woman — were also detained to assist investigations.
“Initial urine screening tests found all of them negative for drugs,” he said in a statement Saturday (Aug 8).
He said the raiding team, upon checking the premises including a lorry, found the ketum powder and believed it was ready for distribution.
The case is being investigated under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952.
He added that further investigations are being carried out by the state narcotics department to identify other syndicate members believed to be involved in the activity.
“Investigations also continue to ensure that ketum abuse in various forms can be comprehensively curbed.
“Sabah Region 4 Marine Police will continue to strengthen intelligence and strategic cooperation with enforcement agencies in combating illegal activities for the safety and well‑being of society,” he added.
