KUALA LUMPUR: The PKR Central Leadership Council has turned down Nurul Izzah Anwar’s request to step down as party deputy president, granting her temporary leave instead to focus on her doctoral studies.
PKR Information Chief Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil confirmed that Nurul Izzah will remain a party member, while Vice-President Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail takes over her duties in the interim.

“Nurul Izzah remains a member of the party and will continue to support our struggle,” Fahmi told reporters after officiating the 2026 Safe Internet Parents and Teachers Association Convention here on Saturday (Aug 8).
The decision follows an announcement on Thursday (Aug 6) that Nurul Izzah would take leave following the 2026 national congress to pursue her PhD.
Fahmi also brushed off speculation that her step back signals weakening support for the administration or instability within the party.
