PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is developing a new framework to improve the quality, safety and inclusiveness of public spaces in line with international standards, says Nga Kor Ming.
The Housing and Local Government Minister said the "MY Public Space" initiative is being developed by the ministry through the National Landscape Department and Urbanice Malaysia in collaboration with UN-Habitat.
He said the initiative marked a shift in how public spaces are planned and managed nationwide.
"Through this initiative, we are not merely building parks or public spaces, but creating an ecosystem for managing public spaces that is more inclusive, safe, sustainable and of higher quality for the well-being of the people.
"It will also help elevate Malaysia's image as a liveable and environmentally sustainable nation internationally," he said.
Nga announced the initiative during the launch of National Landscape Day 2026 at Hang Jebat Stadium, Melaka, on Friday (Aug 7), which was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said the strategic cooperation with UN-Habitat would help raise Malaysia's public space standards to a global level and strengthen the country's position in sustainable, inclusive and liveable urban development.
Nga said the National Landscape Department's strategic plan would also focus on four areas, including strengthening the competitiveness of Malaysia's landscape industry through innovation, skills development and greater access to international markets.
The department will also address climate change through the effective implementation of the 100 Million Tree-Planting Campaign, ecosystem restoration and the development of green urban infrastructure.
Other priorities include expanding quality green networks to support sustainable cities, as well as developing community gardens and elderly-friendly parks to improve urban food security and support an ageing population.
Nga said the four areas would contribute towards greener, more inclusive and climate-resilient public spaces while improving the quality of life.
National Landscape Day 2026, themed "Landskap Lestari, Malaysia MADANI", is being held from Aug 6 to Aug 9 and is expected to attract more than 80,000 visitors.
The programme includes landscape exhibitions, industry dialogues, community competitions and other interactive activities.
This year's celebration also received Malaysia Book of Records recognition for producing the largest number of furniture pieces from waste wood within 24 hours.
It is the sixth Malaysia Book of Records achievement secured by the ministry over the past three years.
