MELAKA: Political differences must not obstruct cooperation between the Federal and state governments when public welfare is at stake, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on Friday (Aug 7).
Speaking at the launch of National Landscape Day at Hang Jebat Stadium, Anwar emphasised that close intergovernmental ties are essential to ensure development benefits reach ordinary citizens.
“Our system of government requires very close cooperation,” Anwar said. “We may have different views and belong to different parties, but this must not hinder friendship, unity, and cooperation that directly benefit the people.”
The Prime Minister praised the Melaka state government and the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) for their coordination in hosting the event, themed “Sustainable Landscape, Malaysia Madani.” He expressed hope that the country's sustainability goals could be swiftly turned into measurable results.
Anwar also called for a shift in national planning priorities, urging officials to focus more on everyday public spaces rather than leaning heavily toward mega-projects that primarily benefit higher-income groups. Specifically, he highlighted the need to upgrade and maintain roadside stalls and small eateries.
“Yes, we are renowned for our impressive and magnificent landmarks, but we must not forget that most Malaysians do not dine in five-star restaurants,” he noted. “In Kuala Lumpur, about 80% of the people eat at stalls and roadside eateries. Our planning has failed if we do not strike that balance.”
The launch was attended by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
