Perak MB lodges report over fake AI video of him

IPOH: Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad has lodged a police report after a doctored video using artificial intelligence (AI) falsely depicted him offering cash.

The Perak Mentri Besar said the video, which showed his face but with a mismatched voice and mouth movement, had already garnered about 200,000 views online.

“This video already has 200,000 views. What is worse is that some people actually communicated with the fake account, asking how much they needed to pay, and what dividends they would get,” he told reporters on Tuesday (Sept 3).

He said his officer had lodged a report with the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to trace the fake account.

Calling the incident “very dangerous and unfortunate,” Saarani said the misuse of AI technology could mislead unsuspecting victims.

“I believe knowledge and technology are meant to improve our lives, not to cause harm.

“But since AI is being misused in this way, everyone, including myself, must be careful,” he said.

Saarani said voters in his Lenggong constituency had tried to verify the video’s authenticity with him.

“I worry about others who may be duped if they do not check,” he said.
