NIBONG TEBAL: A sea of red, white, blue and yellow filled the State Stadium in Batu Kawan as thousands of participants and spectators gathered in high spirits to celebrate the state-level 68th National Day.
Themed “Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni” (Caring for citizens), the grand parade featured 122 marching contingents with 7,533 participants, as well as 22 vehicle contingents with 676 vehicles.
There was also a colourful line-up of cultural performances, all staged under the blazing sun to mark the nation’s independence with pride and unity yesterday.
Together, they cheered “Merdeka” in unison to the Tanggal 31 Ogos and Jalur Gemilang songs while waving their Jalur Gemilang high in the air.
Housewife Koo Voon Ting, 47, said the parade was more than just a spectacle.
Together with her three children aged 10 to 16, she said it was an important lesson in love for the nation.
“This is a showcase of patriotism and also an opportunity to teach the younger generation to love and cherish Malaysia.
“My hope is that our country continues to move forward with unity and integrity,” she said.
Businessman Zainiezam Samsudin, 40, arrived three hours early to secure a good spot to witness the event.
“What touched us most was seeing Malaysians of all races and backgrounds gathered as one.
“We celebrate every year to cultivate patriotism within our family, especially for the children.
“I hope more people will carry this spirit beyond today,” he said.
Technician R. Dev Jegan, 50, who came with his wife and four children, said the celebration was a reminder of the peace and harmony Malaysians should continue to uphold.
“We are grateful to celebrate independence together as friends, regardless of race.
“Events like this also allow the public to better appreciate the sacrifices of our security agencies. I hope our unity will remain strong,” he said.
The parade saw contingents from government departments, statutory bodies, government-linked companies and non-governmental organisations marching past the main stage, where the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, State Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Law Choo Kiang and other state leaders took the salute.
Among the highlights were a guard-of-honour by the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment, armoured vehicle displays featuring two Gempita 8x8 units and vibrant cultural showcases including the SMJK Jit Sin choir, traditional dances and the Muhibah Drum Ensemble.
Exhibition booths by state and federal agencies, as well as displays of assets from the police, armed forces, and Fire and Rescue Department further enlivened the atmosphere as families thronged the venue to learn more about the agencies’ roles.
