WHETHER you are starting out after school or planning your next career move, one question matters most today: will your qualification keep you relevant in a fast-changing job market?
At Open University Malaysia (OUM), that answer is built into the way learning is designed.
The Faculty of Business and Management (FBM) focuses on practical knowledge, flexible study options and real-world skills that help students prepare for both today’s workplace and what comes next.
Students learn in a digital environment that reflects how modern organisations work – through online collaboration, independent learning and real-world problem-solving based on actual situations and data.
A pathway for every level
FBM offers study options that suit different stages of life and career. For those just beginning, diploma programmes provide a strong foundation in areas such as management, accounting and human resource practice.
For those aiming higher, bachelor’s degrees open doors to fields including business administration, marketing, tourism, logistics and supply chain management, accounting and human resource management.
Each programme is designed to build solid business knowledge alongside practical skills that can be applied in the workplace.
For working professionals looking to advance further, postgraduate studies offer deeper expertise through programmes such as the MBA, Master of Management and Master of Human Resource Management.
At the highest level, doctoral programmes like the DBA and PhD in Business Administration allow students to specialise and contribute new knowledge to the field.
Across all levels, the goal is the same – to help students build skills that matter in real working environments, not just in exams.

Going beyond theory
At OUM, learning is not limited to reading materials or watching lectures.Students take an active role through discussions, problem-solving activities and real business applications.
A key example is the Strategic Management course, where students analyse real company cases, take part in structured online discussions, and defend their ideas in writing.
This approach strengthens critical thinking, communication skills and confidence in expressing ideas clearly. Success in this environment depends on active participation.
Students build discipline, manage their time well and contribute consistently throughout their studies. It also shows that quality business education does not require a traditional classroom.
OUM further strengthens future-ready skills through its compulsory Learning Skills for the 21st Century course, where students develop digital literacy, creativity, collaboration and confidence in using technology.
What employers want
OUM regularly updates its programmes based on employer feedback and changes in the job market.
When industry input highlighted the need for stronger practical experience, FBM responded by strengthening work-based learning, internships and short case-based assignments that connect theory with real workplace situations.

According to FBM dean Assoc Prof Dr Zahir Osman, the direction is clear: “While general business qualifications remain valuable, future careers will require stronger knowledge in areas such as data-driven decision-making, digital business tools and supply chain management.
“Students are encouraged to combine their core studies with emerging areas like digital marketing or e-commerce to stand out in the job market.”
Beyond the classroom, students also benefit from career support services, industry webinars and talks by business professionals that keep them connected to current trends and practices.
Learning with peers
One of OUM’s strengths is its learning community. Many students are working adults who bring real workplace experience into class discussions, turning online learning into a space where ideas are shared, tested and improved.
These discussions are guided by experienced e-tutors who support learning while encouraging independence and confidence.
To support students throughout their journey, OUM also provides programme guidance, technical support and ongoing encouragement to help them stay on track.
An FBM qualification represents more than academic achievement. It reflects a graduate’s ability to learn independently, manage time well, work in digital environments and adapt to changing workplace demands.
For anyone looking to build a stronger career and stay relevant in a changing world, OUM’s Faculty of Business and Management offers a flexible and practical pathway forward
