NIBONG TEBAL: More than RM450,000 worth of liquid methamphetamine was seized during a bust in Nibong Tebal.
Penang police chief Comm Datuk Dennis Lim Kwang Keng said the state Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) arrested a 40-year-old man during the operation at about 9pm on Monday (July 6).
"During the operation, about 9kg of liquid methamphetamine worth over RM450,000 was uncovered.
"The success of this operation has crippled a syndicate involved in processing and distributing liquid syabu that had been actively operating in the Nibong Tebal area since May this year.
"The suspect's urine tested negative for drugs, but checks revealed he has a criminal record involving drug-related and other criminal offences," he said in a statement on Thursday (July 9).
He said police also seized assets worth about RM70,000 under the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988, believed to be proceeds from the syndicate's illegal activities.
The suspect has been remanded for seven days from July 7 to July 13 to facilitate investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, along with not fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
Comm Dennis said the success was the result of continuous intelligence gathering by the state NCID with the cooperation of the public.
