PETALING JAYA: There are no reports of any Malaysian students being directly involved or impacted by the demonstrations and riots across parts of France, including Paris, says the Higher Education Ministry.
To date, the ministry reports that 462 Malaysian students are furthering their studies in France.
The ministry, through the Education Attaché Office in Paris, in collaboration with the Foreign Ministry, the Malaysian Embassy in Paris and sponsoring agencies, are continuously monitoring developments to ensure the safety and welfare of Malaysian students in France.
“Academic activities are continuing as usual, with institutions in affected areas implementing online learning.
“Malaysian students in France are advised to avoid affected areas, comply with instructions issued by local authorities and keep abreast of official announcements,” it said in a statement on Wednesday (Oct 21).
The ministry also advised Malaysian students in other European countries to postpone travelling to Paris until the situation is brought under control.
“The ministry will continue monitoring developments and work with the relevant authorities to ensure the safety and welfare of Malaysians are upheld.
“Parents and family members are also urged to remain calm and refer to official sources, alongside ensuring students adhere to safety guidelines issued by the Education Attaché Office in Paris and the Malaysian Embassy in Paris,” it said.
This comes as large-scale riots and protests have swept several European countries, resulting in violent clashes in major cities including Paris and Milan.
In France, the protests were reportedly triggered over education and the cost of living while in Milan, the demonstrations were against wars and rising living costs.
