MELAKA: Police here have called on the public to ignore a recycled viral video that threatens to disrupt the centuries-old interfaith harmony along Jalan Tukang Emas, famously known as Melaka’s "Street of Harmony."
The post, uploaded on Facebook, featured footage of an annual Hindu temple ceremony alongside a caption questioning why the event was held near a mosque.
Acting Melaka Tengah OCPD Superintendent Halim Abas clarified that while the video was shared recently, the footage actually dates back to the ceremony held on April 26.
"The ceremony was conducted peacefully, with zero reports of provocation, public disorder, or disruption," Supt Halim said on Saturday (July 25).
He added that event organisers had secured all required official approvals before the gathering.
Jalan Tukang Emas earned its "Street of Harmony" moniker due to the proximity of three iconic 18th-century places of worship: the Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple, the Kampung Kling Mosque, and the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple.
Supt Halim emphasised that the Hindu temple and neighbouring mosque share a long-standing relationship rooted in mutual respect, accommodation, and cooperation.
"There is no indication of any quarrel, physical provocation, or disturbance occurring during the event," he noted, adding that many social media users had already stepped in to clarify that the video was outdated and misleading.
"Recirculating outdated content without context risks stirring up unnecessary racial or religious tension," Supt Halim warned. "We advise the public not to speculate or share unverified posts, and to always rely on official sources."
