GEORGE TOWN: Police believe that the reason behind a teacher’s attempt to slit his wife's throat during a domestic dispute in Balik Pulau on Wednesday (Aug 27) was linked to debt.
South West OCPD Asst Comm Sazalee Adam stated that a preliminary investigation revealed the 30-year-old man took out a bank loan for stock investment and was also paying instalments for goods bought through an e-commerce platform.
"So far, we believe the quarrel between the couple involved is due to a debt problem. However, further investigations are still ongoing," he said when contacted by Sinar Harian on Friday (Aug 29).

Sazalee, however, denied the allegation that the suspect had a debt with an unlicensed moneylender.
"The allegation that the suspect owes money to loan sharks is not true.
"This is because all loans are made through legitimate financial institutions," he added.
He added that the victim, who is also the suspect's 28-year-old wife, was now in a stable condition.
"The victim is reported to be stable but still in the recovery process and cannot speak much.
"The police took his statement yesterday (Aug 28), while the suspect was placed in the Psychiatric Ward, Jalan Perak Hospital for a mental health examination," he said.
Previously, it was reported that a woman narrowly escaped having her throat slit by her husband during a domestic dispute after he attacked her with a kitchen knife in Taman Tunas Muda, Sungai Ara, on Wednesday.
The incident was said to have happened at about 6am. The victim's mother heard her daughter screaming when she went to check and saw her son-in-law stabbing her daughter.
The son-in-law then turned the knife on himself, slitting his left wrist and neck
Both the victim and her husband were taken to Penang Hospital for treatment.
