Husband attempts to slit wife's throat during domestic dispute in Balik Pulau

BALIK PULAU: A 28-year-old woman narrowly escaped having her throat slit by her husband during a domestic dispute after he attacked her with a kitchen knife.

Balik Pulau OCPD Asst Comm Sazalee Adam said the incident occurred at around 6 am in a house in Sungai Ara.

"The victim's mother heard her daughter screaming from upstairs and went to check.

She entered her daughter's bedroom and found her son-in-law stabbing her daughter.

He was trying to slit the victim's throat," he told the press on Wednesday (Aug 27).

ACP Sazalee said the victim's mother managed to pull her daughter off the bed and away from her son-in-law.

"As she was pulling her daughter out, the victim's mother saw her son-in-law turn the knife on himself, slitting his left wrist and neck.

Both the victim and her husband were taken to Penang Hospital for treatment.

The victim sustained neck injuries but is in a stable condition, while the suspect is conscious but in a critical condition and is in the red zone," he said.

ACP Sazalee said the couple, both teachers aged 28 and 30, have been married for six years and have one child.

"They are teachers at a school in this district. Both studied Mandarin as a second language at a university in Beijing, China," he said.

He said the cause of the incident is still being investigated.

"The victim and her husband are said to have had no prior issues. Witnesses said they lived harmoniously. The husband has no known mental health issues.

There are no records of previous fights or problems.

People we spoke to said they seemed happy and were not facing financial issues," he said.

ACP Sazalee said the couple lived with the victim's family in Sungai Ara.

"We were told that even last night they seemed happy and nothing suspicious indicated any issues," he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
