Police crack down on online love scammers, five foreigners arrested

NILAI: Police have detained five foreigners for allegedly engaging in online love scams involving more than RM1mil.

Nilai police chief Supt Abdul Malik Hasim said the suspects, who were in their 30s and 40s, were detained here around 1.50pm on Aug 28.

Two of the five detained were women.

"We also seized several items which we believe were used by the suspects to carry out their scam activities.

"One of the suspects even tried to escape by jumping off the third floor of the block, but we managed to apprehend him," he said in a statement.

The suspect suffered broken ribs in the incident.

Supt Abdul Malik said preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspects used the Facebook platform to cheat their victims, who were both locals and foreigners.

"They used various profiles to con their victims, and we believe they have been active since Oct 2023," he said.

Police, he said, seized four laptops, mobile phones (15), tablets (two), debit cards (11), pen drives (two) and modems (two) from the unit.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and Section 120B for criminal conspiracy.

Police, he said, have also obtained an order to remand the suspects for four days until Sept 1.

He urged the public to call the police at 06-7904222 if they had any information on such scams.
