MELAKA: A 36-year-old man pleaded guilty in a Magistrate’s Court here to charges of stabbing another man and failing to produce his identity card during a police check.
K. Devandran, who was dressed in women’s clothing, entered the plea after the charges were read out to him before Magistrate Nur Afiqah Radhiah Zainurin on Friday (Aug 29).
The court postponed sentencing and ordered the accused to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, fixing Sept 4 for next mention.
According to the charge sheet, Devandran was accused of voluntarily causing hurt to a 49-year-old man with a meat cleaver outside a travel agency along Jalan Melaka Raya 14, Taman Melaka Raya, here at 2.10pm on Sunday (Aug 24).

The charge under Section 324 of the Penal Code carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail, a fine, caning, or any two of these punishments.
Devandran also pleaded guilty to a second charge under Rule 25(1)(n) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 for failing to produce his MyKad or any other form of identification when approached by police along Jalan Melaka Raya at around noon on Monday (Aug 25).
The offence carries a penalty of up to three years’ imprisonment, a fine not exceeding RM20,000, or both, upon conviction.
In a separate proceeding at the Sessions Court before judge Haderiah Siri, Devandran claimed trial to a charge under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 for possessing a meat cleaver.
If found guilty, he faces between five and 10 years in prison as well as caning.
The court denied bail and fixed Oct 6 for next mention.
