KUALA LUMPUR: The man who was kidnapped in a case involving a RM7mil ransom demand is believed to have been directly involved in a local drug trafficking syndicate.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said investigations are ongoing to identify other individuals believed to be linked to the syndicate.
"Those who have been arrested are still being investigated as we work to identify other members of the network.
"The victim is believed to have been directly involved in a local drug trafficking syndicate," he said at a press conference at the Cheras district police headquarters on Wednesday (July 29).
Earlier, the media reported that the 44-year-old victim had been detained under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985 (LLPK) after investigations uncovered elements of drug trafficking linked to the kidnapping case.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Comm Datuk M. Kumar had previously said the victim was arrested by the Bukit Aman NCID after joint investigations identified his involvement in a drug trafficking syndicate.
He also said police had arrested two more local men in their 30s believed to be involved in the kidnapping, including a former police officer who was dismissed from the force in 2023 over a drug-related case.
The kidnapping case was previously solved in less than 48 hours after police arrested six suspects comprising five local men and one local woman, aged between 30 and 46 years old.
