Bumiputra quota in new housing areas to be based on population density, says Perak MB

IPOH: The quota percentage for bumiputra lots in new housing areas will now be based on the majority of the population in the respective constituencies, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

The Perak Mentri Besar said for areas with lower bumiputra population, the percentage would be at least 30%, while the highest would be at 50%.

Saarani said the population composition of an area would be based on official data from MyCensus, which is under the Statistics Department (DOSM).

"Before this, the data for population composition was based on data from the Election Commission.

"But the data would show some areas like Canning or Buntong having close to no bumiputra population," he said in a press conference after opening the bumiputra Property Aspiration Programme here on Wednesday (July 29).

"Now, data is based on DOSM, which is more accurate, because they do house-to-house (surveys).

"So some areas will have 10% (bumiputra lot quota) while the highest is 50%," he added.

Saarani said this was fairer to all stakeholders and also more realistic.

"Back then, there were requirements to build at least 30 houses for bumiputras but there were no buyers.

"This caused developers to incur losses," he said, adding that the policy was enforced on June 1.

"Developers would need not pay more to release the (unsold bumiputra) lots," he added.

Saarani also said that the discounts for bumiputra for properties have also been maintained.

He said there would be a 5% discount for properties valued at RM350,000 and below, while 7% for homes priced at RM350,000 and above.
